How to measure windows for curtains: Tools you will need

To accurately measure your windows for curtains, you'll need:

• A tape measure 
• Step ladder
• Pencil
• Paper

Measuring the window width

There are two ways to measure the width of your window:

1. Inside mount method — Measure the window frame from one inside edge to the other. Then, measure the window's top, middle and bottom and record the smallest measurement to find your window's width. 

2. Outside mount method — Measure the entire window width, including the frame. Should your curtains extend beyond the window frame, add some extra size to your measurement on either side. This extra measurement is called the ‘stack back’ and allows your curtains to stack off the window. We would suggest a minimum of at least 30cm but it does vary with your window size and choice of curtain heading.

Measuring for the rod

If you're using an existing curtain rod or track, measure the width of the rod, not the window. 

Measuring the window length

There are four standard lengths to choose from:

• Floor — These should skim the floor. To measure for floor-length curtains, measure from the top of the rod to the floor and subtract 1cm. We can assist you in making deductions for the track if required.

• Sill — These curtains should hang just below the window sill. To measure for sill length curtains, measure from the bottom of the rod to the window sill and add a few centimetres.

• Custom — These are suitable if you need something other than the standard length for your window. To measure for custom-length curtains, start from the top of the rod to your desired length.

Common mistakes to avoid when measuring windows

There are a few common mistakes to avoid when measuring your windows to ensure it fits nicely:

• Forgetting to measure the window frame
• Not allowing for the curtain fullness ratio — the curtain track or pole length is not the same as the amount of fabric used to make the curtains
• Measuring the curtain, blinds, drapes or shades instead of the window itself.
