FAQs

What makes a good upholstery fabric?

High-quality upholstery fabrics should be durable and resistant to wear and tear. They should also be able to withstand repeated cleaning without losing their shape or colour. In addition, the fabrics should be relatively easy to care for, stain-resistant and comfortable to sit on.

What is the difference between the regular fabric and upholstery fabric?

Regular fabric can be used for craft projects and clothing. On the other hand, upholstery fabric is usually made from synthetic and natural blends, including polyester, wool, linen and acrylic. It is often heavier and thicker since it is designed to be resistant to wear and tear and easy to clean. Upholstery fabric is often used in furniture, cushions and other household items that see a lot of use.

What are the strongest upholstery fabrics?

When it comes to upholstery fabrics, there are a few factors to consider to determine which fabric is the strongest. Natural fibres like wool and cotton are usually weaker than synthetic fibres like polyester and acrylic. In addition, tightly woven fabrics are typically more durable than loosely woven fabrics.

Upholstery fabrics should be tested for a “rub rate” and whilst the actual number can vary based on the testing methodology, we would suggest looking at fabrics with a bare minimum of 15,000-20,000 rubs for home use. The higher the number, the more heavy wearing.

Lastly, heavier materials are usually more durable than lighter fabrics. As a result, the most durable fabrics tend to be made from tight, heavyweight weaves of synthetic and natural fibre blends.

How can I keep upholstery fabric clean?

Upholstered furniture is a popular choice for many homes, thanks to its comfort and style. However, upholstery fabric can be tricky to keep clean. Here are a few tips to help you keep your upholstery looking like new:

  • Vacuum regularly — This will help remove dust and dirt particles before they have a chance to build up.
  • Spot clean spills immediately — Use a mild detergent and a damp cloth to clean up any spills as quickly as possible.
  • Steam clean periodically — Steam cleaning is a deep-cleaning method that can remove trapped dirt and stains. Be sure to use a gentle steam setting and test the fabric in an inconspicuous area first.

What are the things one should check when selecting upholstery fabrics?

Selecting the right upholstery fabric is essential for achieving your home's desired look and feel. The first thing to consider is the overall style of your home. Choose fabrics in similar colours and patterns if you want your upholstery to blend in. If you want it to stand out, make a bolder choice in colour or select a fabric with more elaborate patterns.

You should also think about how often the fabric will be used. Heavier materials are more durable and can withstand more wear and tear, making them ideal for busy areas like living rooms and family rooms. By keeping these factors in mind, you can narrow down your choices and find the perfect upholstery fabric for your home.
